Know Your Datsun 240Z

Everything you need to understand, appreciate, and care for the most iconic Japanese sports car ever made.

History

The Car That Started It All

When Nissan launched the S30 240Z in 1969, it changed the sports car world forever. Designed by Yoshiharu Matsuo, the 240Z brought European GT styling, impressive performance, and an accessible price point that shook up the market. Over 150,000 were sold in North America alone.

Model Guide

The 240Z Model Years (1970-1973)

All 240Zs share the inline-6 L24 engine, but each year has subtle differences worth knowing.

1970

First Year - The Purest Z

The very first 240Zs featured a round orange speedo, early-style dash, and chrome trim. These are the most collectible. Round headlight bezels and a simpler interior make them easy to spot.

1971

Refinement Year

Subtle refinements to gauges and interior. The mechanical package remained identical. Still highly desirable and often more affordable than 1970s while sharing the same classic look.

1972

Bumper Updates

Federal safety regulations brought slightly larger bumpers. Drivetrain and engine remained pure. 1972 is the sweet spot for many builders - lower prices, same great mechanicals.

1973

Final True 240Z

The last of the real 240Zs before displacement grew to 2.6L. Nearly identical to 1972 in performance. Lower demand means better buying opportunities for builders.

Buyer Guide

What to Look For When Buying

The 240Z is notorious for rust. Know what to check before you buy.

Floor Pans

First thing to rust on a 240Z. Lift the carpet and check every corner. Rust here means expensive repairs.

Wheel Wells

Check inner and outer wheel wells. Frame rail rot at the rear is a major structural concern and a red flag.

Hatch Corners

Rust from the inside out and often look fine until you push on them. Inspect thoroughly before buying.

Engine Basics

The L24 is incredibly robust. Check for smooth idle, no smoke, and proper oil pressure. Easy to fix when maintained.

Documentation

Clean title is essential. Original build sheets or service records add value. Verify the VIN plate matches.

Drive It

Drive at highway speed. Listen for diff whine and transmission crunch. Bring a DSC member if you can.
